Pik TV and Google Home

NigelA
Organizer

Since the Pik TV upgrade yesterday (July 16), I am unable to stop and start my TV using Google Home (home mini)

Google Home recognizes the Pik Tv as a device but it will not allow it to be placed in the Home area (where it is controlled)

I have tried a number of things from deleting my Google Home account to rebooting and resetting the Pik TV box

Thoughts?

Just an update on my 'Google Home' problem - my telus PIK box recently stopped processing the internet (ethernet or wireless) and with the help of Telus Tech support it was decided to replace the unit. I have just received a replacement unit from Telus and after connecting everything back up, I now Google Home access to this replacement device. So the problem was not Google but either the Telus upgrade or a faulty PIK Tv box

One other quirky thing - I was not able to programme the new remote to work power and/or volume on my Sony Home Theatre receiver. The old remote will operate power and volume on the receiver, so I guess I am keeping my old remote. I see there is an update for my old remote but I am wary of doing the update in case I lose access to power/volume control on my receiver

Hi @NigelA

My suspicion is that something must have changed in your google home mini's settings. The Pik TV update shouldn't have changed anything, so this is strange. I am still able to control my Pik TV using the google home mini (and app) and I didn't change any settings post-update. FWIW I used the command "Hey Google, turn on the TV". It sounds like you've tried the first few troubleshooting steps I'd recommend, but unfortunately the home mini isn't a device our troubleshooting team supports.

Hi KHR

Ii did not change any google home settings prior to the Pik TV upgrade. From your reply it sounds like your google home recognizes your TV  as a device (rather than Pik TV), whereas my Google home recognizes the Pik TV box as a device and not the TV. For me in order to turn TV on and off I have to say Turn on/off Telus Pik TV - if I say hey Google turn on the TV, Google does not recognize that command.

What does Google recognize as a TV device in your Google Home account?

Hi @NigelA

My Google home mini definitely does not recognize my TV - it's pretty old and not connected to the internet! In the home app, it's labeled TELUS Pik TV and when I say "Hey Google turn on the TV" she responds with 'Sure, turning on TELUS Pik TV'.

Can you force a renaming of the assigned name (Telus PikTV) in the Google Assistant app on your phone?

Yes, try renaming the device in Google home. Select the device and click on the settings icon (gear). Click on the device name and change it to something simple and distinct that won't be confused with other devices. As a test call it Banana and see if it works. 😄

Unfortunately Google Home does not allow me to rename the device

As part of troubleshooting I have tried to reset the Telus Pik TV box (ie pressing the small button at the back of the box), unfortunately this button does not reset the device. I can press the button with power on or off but it does not go into a reset mode - should I be looking to exchange this device?

Google Home lets me rename any of my devices including devices I haven't added to my home.

I'm on version 2.25.1.5. What version do you have?

I have the same Google Home version you have

When I go into Rooms and Devices I see 1 device in my Home + 1 other device

When I click on the 1 other device I get ..... Other Cast Device - Telus Pik Tv Android Tv

When I click on the above, a page comes up with only 3 areas which can be selected - one area says 'Let others control your cast media' this is normally selected as 'ON' but I have tried it in the 'OFF' position with no change to setting up a 'Home' and other devices

The second area that I can click on is called 'Enable voice control and more.....' When I click on this a pop up box appears that say 'Link your device to your Google account to personalize your experience when using Google products' I click on 'Yes I'm in' and up comes an error message saying 'There was an error linking your account. Try again later'

The third area Home - add to a home......when I click on this I get 'Choose your Home' ....... I select my Home and then get to a screen that says 'Move device' - I then select my 'Home' to move the device to and up comes an error message 'Unable to put the device in your Home'

Can't get any further

Information at the bottom of 'Device Settings' page...........

System firmware version: PTT1.AB3.4

Cast firmware version: 1.44.200455

IP address: 192.168.1.64

After you select "Telus Pik Tv Android Tv" does it show a page with a gear icon in the upper right? Click on that to take you to the settings menu for that device. Under the Device Info section of the settings click on Name to change it.

No gear icon appears after I select Telus Pik TV Android TV

Re my last comment - I see the correct menu for the google 'Home' speaker and could remove that, but because the Telus Pik TV device does not reside in my 'Home' I cannot delete that

Out of me depth here but I notice the ip address of the google Home mini is different from the ip address of the Telus Pik TV device - if they are on the same network using the same wifi signal should they not be the same ip address?

The first 3 parts of the IP should be the same. The last part cannot be the same for any 2 devices.
