Hello,
There are so many problems, I don't even know where to start.
I'm 5 weeks into my Pik TV trial. I've been trying it in my cell phone, in web browsers (PC), and in my Android box (not a Pik TV box).
The cell phone was the simplest to fix. After installing the app I couldn't make it follow the screen rotation. So I had a tiny little image in portrait mode only. I searched the web, found many similar comments/complaints, read the recommendations... uninstalled the app, re-installed it, and the problem is gone. But honestly, I haven't used it much, so I don't really know if it has any other problems.
In the browser it's much worse. Firefox shows me the guides and descriptions, but once I hit "play", the screen goes blank and all I see is the spinning icon at the center. Chrome does "work". I open the guide, navigate through a couple of screens to find what I want, then click on "play" - then I rant in frustration because I remember what happens next. "You need Adobe Flash Player". Well, Flash Player is installed, it's up-to-date, and I already added the Pik Tv address to the exception list, but it keeps asking me to allow Flash Player to run. Every time. So I click on "Allow", and it gets back to the initial screen. And there I go through all screens again until I find what I want. Frustrating, to say the least.
On top of that, I was "kicked out" of a program once or twice with some error message. Can't remember now what it was. And earlier this week the program wouldn't load at all, all I had was a blank screen. I tried a few different things, and finally got it back online after I deleted the browser cookies.
By the way... Flash Player is obsolete, unsafe, and due to be decommissioned next year. Are we going to have to wait until then to have an updated technology?
The worst of all is the Android box. For starters... the login screen won't "read" the screen orientation properly, and besides keeping the image small (in portrait mode, while the screen is in landscape), more than half of it is blank. I couldn't see where to click to type my user name and password. So I installed a third-party app to fool Pik Tv into thinking the screen was like whatever it was expecting. And logged in.
I had the Android box connected through its own wifi to my personal router, which in turn is connected to Telus' modem (which is bridged) through an ethernet cable. Several different errors would come up every few minutes - totally unusable. Then I hooked the box to an external wifi adapter that improved the connection quite a bit, and I have a lot less errors now, but still enough to cause big frustration.
While using it, well... there's no support for scrolling. I need to use both hands to scroll through the program grids, it's quite cumbersome. Then in the middle of a show... boom. It just goes back to the show details, with no message or warning. Then later, in the middle of another show... boom. "Sorry, an error occurred - please try again later". Then later, in the middle of another show... boom. "You can only watch this while connected to your internet at home" (and I begin to lose my temper - where do you think I am, stupid little app?). And these are usually cartoons. I haven't watched a full movie yet, I would be really mad if I had that kind of annoyance while watching a movie. For each of those errors, I usually click on "play" again and it resumes playing - so why the error messages to begin with?
Today, the final straw... Let's see how a modern movie looks and sounds like. I turned on the AVR to check what kind of audio stream I would get (because the movie details don't show that "little" detail). Guess what? "This content can't be played in a jailbroken device". What the... ???
I guess I'm going to cancel the service at the end of the trial. Unless they can fix all that in less than a month.
Regards,
Vini

Hi, thanks for replying.
Certified box...
1) Sorry, but I was not asked if I had or if I wanted to purchase or rent an "Android TV certified PikTV box" when I signed up for the service on the phone. And if I were, I would have declined - so Telus would lose a customer either way. If the system doesn't work with my current hardware, I'm not interested.
2) It's an Android app running on an Android device, just like my phone. So I guess a certified phone is required too?
If the problem is having root access in the Android box, just tell me. I can look into that and try to get around it. But will it fix all my problems? I suspect it won't.
Regarding the browser, as I'm writing this, it happened again: the site is redirecting me to an address that just gives me a blank screen. Do I need to delete the cookies every couple of days now? I forgot to mention that once I do that I need to log in again, one more nuisance to deal with.
I know there's an option to check always allow. That's what I meant by adding the Pik TV address to the exception list. It works until I close Chrome, but next time I start it I need to go through the whole process again. Which is how Chrome works (see https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/6258784?co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop&hl=en). And since the system doesn't work in Firefox...
I completely understand the challenges in supporting so many different hardware and software platforms, different configurations, and different user habits. But right now I think Pik TV support is too restrictive. And for me, it's not working.
Thanks,
Vini

There is only one certified hardware device that supports PikTV and that’s the TELUS android box you purchase. It runs certified android tv period.
Android TV and your non android tv box are two similar yet very different things. I suggest you have a read here.
The problem with all the cheap android boxes that flog amazon, eBay etc are mainly all fly by night companies with modified versions of the kernel (hence rooted). Most have no security updates, clone chipsets etc. They’re there to make a buck not support the device. Your PikTV app will never run properly on your non PikTV device as it’s designed for the TV OS version of android. Not using a mobile version.. (hence you scroll, screen text input areas cut off etc)
You can see a list of actual Canadian providers that use various certified Android TV devices Here.
They also run actual versions of Netflix not mobile versions.
It clearly states on the website how PikTV can be used. Using non supplied TELUS hardware is the only reason you have most your issues.
The PikTv android media box is supplied with an actual Bluetooth remote that has the guide button and all aspects of the menus easily launched. Hit your local buy and sell site, chances are you can find one for less money.
Legal live tv platforms will always be restrictive. As the channel owners want their content protected and not be stolen and used for illegal means. Any tv provider in the world is under the same obligation.

Hi,
While I agree with most of what you said, I should have been better informed when I signed up for the service. And if I'm asked why I'm cancelling my subscription, I'll say the main reason is it doesn't work properly with my hardware.
That's clear now (and thanks for the links - I'll surely take a look).
How about the browser, any other comments?
Thanks,
Vini

The information was clearly stated on the website. It’s whether or not you chose to read it. As seen below:
As for your browser problem I haven’t encountered any issues the limited amount of times I do actually use it. Don’t really have a need myself for the browser of PikTV usually.

That's not clear enough. It must say "rooted mobile devices are not supported" or something to that effect. Besides, as I said before, I signed up *on the phone* and didn't have the website in front of me. Fortunately I'm on a trial and can cancel it before I get charged. So no harm done, it's just a big disappointment. Anyway, I got your point and moved on already.
There's one more issue with the browser that I forgot to mention. Sometimes the audio is way out of sync. Some 4 or 5 seconds ahead of the video. It happens several times over a couple of days, then it doesn't happen for a few days, then it comes back... but I haven't seen it for about a week now, I believe. It's not so inconvenient as the others, as simply stopping and playing again fixes it.
Thanks,
Vini

I meant it must say "rooted mobile devices are not supported" or something to that effect, in order to be clear enough.
Still... I'm not disputing the rules. Just saying I'm not willing to pay for the service as it is.
Thanks,

No, I didn't. I assume it should work on my current Android device when it says "on your mobile device with the Pik TV App" and the Pik TV app is available for my device in Play Store.
Thanks,
Vini

You didn’t bother looking to see which version of Android came with the box.
And you guys didn't seem to bother reading anything I wrote... Did you notice I was on the phone when I signed up? And to clarify that: the call was about my internet plan, and during the call, Pik TV was mentioned, and I signed up for a free trial.
@Nighthawk wrote:
“Mobile device” is a phone or tablet. It is not the same as a cheap imported rooted Android set top box running a copy of android designed for cell phones and not the TV platform. That’s why it shows in the App Store.
Which is good enough for any other App I ever tried and might lead many people to think as I did. No problem, I'm OK with that. But I wasn't told that on the phone and I honestly don't think that's clear in WestCoasterBC's post:

Since we're at it, and I guess this could be useful to someone else reading this, if I root my phone I won't be able to watch On Demand content (at least part of it) on the phone either, correct?
Thanks,

Correct. There are other non-Telus apps that have the same restrictions related to on demand and rooted devices. I've run into that with one of Shaw's TV apps in the past.

OK, thanks!
(That could be clearer in the service description too.)

The problem with that is the vast majority of people do NOT have a rooted phone or tablet. I would hope that anyone who has rooted or considering rooting their device, has actually read up on rooting and what limitations may appear in terms of app functionality before doing it. Same thing with buying a pre-rooted cheap imported Android set top box. Since they run a rooted mobile version of the OS, the apps that appear for it on the app store are not guaranteed to be compatible or work with a set top box and remote.

I'm not sure if you agreed with me or not... 🐵
My point is... given the abundance of these devices available in big retailers, I think it would be wise of Telus to give customers a warning. That's all.

Hi Vini,
I understand your frustrations on rooted phone. It is understandable that Telus has to keep their DRM in place. Have your tried Magisk?
As for the browser experience, I have had similar issues with sync on Chrome. This is usually with my weaker laptops. A weak laptop has a much harder time to decode the encrypted stream from Telus.
This is the balance between protection and comparability.
Anthony
I'm running a fairly decent 6-core desktop with 16GB of RAM, it doesn't look like it can't cope with the load. The sync issue only happens when first loading the first program. After that, if I stop and play again, it doesn't happen anymore (unless I close the browser and start from the beginning).
Yes, DRM is necessary, I agree (even though I may question its effectiveness...).
I'm going to look into Magisk, thanks for the tip!

The browser app is completely trash and shouldn't be using flash. It's a security vulnerability. Full screen doesn't work for me any chrome or edge which is hilarious that a TV service in 2019 with browser support can't get this stuff figured out.

It's a shame they are still trying to push their own underpowered buggy Android box and haven't released an official app for certified Android TV devices like the Nvidia Shield. Most of the competition like Bell have released proper apps. I've got the service for free for 2 years but have only used it a couple times because the web interface is so terrible and outdated.

Viewing through the browser is so bad for me, that I resorted to installing an android emulator and running PikTV through that. I can't believe it runs so much better than using a "native" solution.
