BlackBerry Legacy Devices End Of Life

BlackBerry discontinued support for all of their devices on January 4, 2022 and the network infrastructure that supported most handset connectivity has been shut down. Any legacy BlackBerry devices that are running BlackBerry OS will no longer function reliably as a result. BlackBerry OS 10 and later devices may retain some functionality, but they remain unsupported by BlackBerry and their operation cannot be guaranteed into the future.

Announced back in 2016, BlackBerry has shifted its focus entirely towards becoming a software company. They agreed in 2017 to continue to support their legacy services for at least two more years, and the time has come for their aging infrastructure to be shut down.

Crossing my fingers the Key3 will be here in 2022.

@xl are you a BB fan? If so, I hope you have an Android-based device! If not, early reports suggest that the more recent BBOS 10 devices such as the Passport and Q10 may still be partially functional, however that functionality can't be guaranteed.

I wasn't familiar with the Key3 but looking it up I would be worried that it's become vapourware. Seemingly no updates from Onward Mobility in months.

I believe the significant amount of tooling and production to get to market vs potential sales is enough to leave any company wanting to license the blackberry name to be dead in the water. Return on investment is every companies MO vs niche sales.

@DanR :  Yep, been a BB fan/user for like 15 years.  I'm currently using the Key2 that may need a new battery soon.  I would rather just get the Key3 when/if it's released.  I so need a physical keyboard.

Very true @WestCoasterBC, it's actually impressive that they were able to obtain any kind of startup funding to begin with. For all the BB fans out there though I hope it will come to fruition at some point.

@xl at least your Key2 will keep on kicking for the foreseeable future as it's running Android 🙂
