Taking over a plan?

Parros

So the contract of the phone I've been using is up. I took the contract over from my mom but never bothered putting it into my name and just paid her. Now that's it's up I'd like to switch it into my name, will I lose the current plan I'm on by doing this or will I be ok as I would like to continue on with this plan?

You should be able to complete a transfer of ownership. Both of you should be present to complete the transaction, and you will likely need ID sufficient to complete a credit check.

Thanks for the response would it be better to do it at my local Telus store or over the phone with the Telus mobility number?

I would expect the Telus store would be the better choice, as they can confirm your ID. A phone call might work if you already have another account (Internet, telephone or tv) with Telus.
