No service (help!)

Alright, so, over the few last days my cell phone and provider (Telus) have been doing some wonky things. I keep loosing service, whenever I turn my 3g off. I use to be able to turn on and off my 3g, without ever losing connection, and now it turns off constantly. I'm just concerned to be on 3g all the time, because I don't have unlimited data. I have a iPhone 3, and it never use to act this way. Also, my battery is fine. I would just like to know why I keep leaving the service, and how I can stop it.

Greetings eikll, let's keep it simple. In your Iphone, you should have a 3G setting and you should also have a data/LTE/web setting. The last one is the one you want to turn off to avoid your data charges. In your phone, 3G stands for your Telus network for calls and messages, so if you turn it off, you'll loose everything in terms of service. The web setting may be different according to your iOS version but search on Google regarding your specific iOS version.

Dark_Knight is also correct, turning 3G off will not enable 2G since, if I'M correct, Telus was using Cdma technology before, no sim cards.

To clarify, do you mean that if you turn off the 3G data on your iPhone in settings that your voice connection ceases to work?

My old iPhone 3GS required data to connect to the voice network. I learned this when switching it to prepaid. It needs far less than 20 MB per month to set itself up.

While I recognize this does not answer your question, the simple answer might be to leave the phone data turned on, and use a little of you 'not unlimited' data plan.

No, I manually turn off the 3g. But I share the limited data with the rest of my family, and I know its like 100MB or something super small.

With my iPhone 4, as soon as I turn 3G off it loses connection since Telus doesn't have a compatible 2G network for it.

@eikll That is your problem.

As @nighthawk said, telus does not have a 2G network to fall back to like Rogers/Fido - turning it off essentially turns off your cellular radio.
