Email data usage

CDF
Just Moved In
Over the last two months, my Galaxy Mega has started using crazy amounts of data. It is my email. It used to be about 17MB a month. Now it's 3 to 4 GB a month! Telus tech support said to switch to Microsoft Outlook so I did. No change in data usage. Now Telus says sorry, cant help u and has blocked data usage because the over charge is at $50 and I'm not even half way thru my billing cycle. The email is even a Telus account! Any ideas, anyone?

I don't know if this applies in your situation, but a friend who had set up an outlook account with a large directory tree found a similar problem - the mail program parses the whole mail system to find any changes to your mail. Consumes HUGE amounts of data.

A few suggestions:

Make sure you are not pushing email updates to your phone - set it to fetch email only when you want.

Change email program to another.

Check to make sure no other programs are downloading data over your cellular network - turn them off in settings, if necessary so they only download on wi-fi.

I'm sure others will stop by with further suggestions.

Thoughts....

  • when you look at the "data usage" app and scroll down.  Does it say your email is to blame?
  • are you friends sending you lots of high resolution images? That can quickly add to your data count.
