Data blocking

Tpaventi

I requested to have 3 of 5 devices with data block enabled when setting up services on those numbers. They are for our kids and so I requested data block so they wouldn't use all the data. This did not happen because now I see we are almost at our limit and that there is no data block on their lines.
How do I block data from their devices?

You have to add a data block feature. They are $2 per line. If you are doing it from the add you go to to plans & devices > pick the plan of the line you want it on and that gives you a drop down menu > then pick Data & Add-ons > Change monthly data add on > and you add the Data block $2. Repeat for the other 2 lines. If you are doing this on the telus.com site you go to Mobility Plans & Devices > Details of your plan & Add-ons > Change add-ons in classic > and again just pick what line you are changing and add the $2 data block.

There is no blocking on individual lines, until each reach $50 of overage, but you can manage data limits, etc on a share plan. Have a look at the Data Manager to see what can be done.  If you still need to have the certainty to block data at or before 100% of consumption for each user, and the Data Manager does not allow the level of control you need, have a look and see if Koodo's Shock Free Data is a better fit.

Also, you can add a data top-up to your account so you don't run dry. These can be added through My Account, and are available in differing quantities.

@Mobility_Princess

  Is there a FAQ on this to which we could point folks?  I thought the $2 data block blocked all data except for Picture messages.

Umm apparently we've just created the reference page @NFtoBC! I looked and there was nothing on telus.com. To be fair they don't list nearly all the features they offer either other than a handful of long distance features and add ons. The only links I could find were these. 1. Talking about the data manager, $50 data blocks and how to use the data manager but, it had no mention of the $2 data block or that it even exists:

http://www.telus.com/en/ab/support/article/mobility-data-blocks?eVar35=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.telus.com%2F...  2. Talking about picture messaging and how it requires data but, that you are not charged data for using the feature. Again no mention about the $2 data block. http://www.telus.com/en/on/support/article/photo-video-messaging . I do know iyou have to turn on cellular data in your settings and then you can use your picture messaging but won't incur any data charges. If someone called in and asked me I would tell them this too. I have been told this by technical support and by the loyalty department.

This post should be pinned as the first in any searches for "data usage block"! I just spent 1.5hrs looking for this knowledge. All the rest of the threads didn't really address the ability to actually control individual lines on my shared data plan.

It sucks having to pay for it! Should be part of the data manager not an add-on. But at least I can know stop a $35 overage hit before I get a chance to add 2GB before I get another $25 hit. This is more customer gouging. Just like how overages are per line on a "shared" plan, which until now, I could not control.

That being said. Thank you for making the next year of my contract bearable.

Update: I just went in to take back control and it looks like the add-on is $0.00. Maybe just my data plan?

Although not the solution you might be looking for.  Most phones have a data limiter you can set on the device.  Even though I never reach the 6GB limit on my plan, I still manually set that within my Android devices just to make sure I actually can't exceed it.  This also refreshes with my set billing date in the same settings.  Until you figure out the block from the account side, perhaps you could see if their devices have a setting that would turn off their data after using a preset limit.
