is the phone on maximum brightness?
How is the battery life on airplane mode turned ON? Do you have poor reception where you live and work?

brightness is at minimum level with power saver activated.battery is brand new. airplane mode turned
on.sync turned off.mobile data turned off.signal
strength 3 and 4 bars. when charging overnight,
phone turned off and takes upward o 9 hours
from 40% or so charge. if i unplug charger at 100%
and leave phone off for a few hours, charge already
shows a drop tp 85 or 87%. has me very puzzled.

You might have a short inside that's causing a drain. Have you taken apart your phone recently? You may have gotten something in there during reassembly. Moisture perhaps?

Also check your battery usage app to see what apps or compenents are using the most power.

phone has not been taken apart nor exposed to moisture.app discharges all seem normal.i thought of a short so blew out charging port with compressed air.have downloaded and then erased a couple of task ukilling and anti-virus apps.they found everything to be normal.thinking now of just putting up with it and getting a new phone when contract expires.thanks for all the suggestions.

little bit disappointed that no one has suggested a fix for my discharge problem.the comments so far hsve been like out of kindergarden.
have been turning the phone off overnight to get a fullcharge. then, when i turn it on, immediately the battery power shows an immediate discharge from 100% to 89 or 92%. just by turning it on.
this afternoon i left it turned on while charging. i was at 32%. closed everything, let it charge for 4 hours. the power rating after 4 hours, with a brand new battery, a brand new charging cord, everything turned off, went from 32% to 11%.
i do not believe in gremlins.
just wondering if there is some tech savy person who reads this who might have some insight past simply saying your phone might be wet.
and yes,i am a smart guy and have put the battery on a full load discharge.and that was fine.
now i am thinking a software problem.perhaps a meson particle hit a switch ?
arrgh. driving me crazy.

That phone looks like it has caused many people, problems.  Bugs are many.

I see that you are doing the usual and knocking items off the list.

A few posts in this linked thread have actual information...

http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-t-mobile/481966-my-samsung-galaxy-s2-batteries-suddenly-d...

Based on that linked thread, what you need to look for is:

What app or system process shows high usage(relates to the battery) in the monitor?  Is it the OS? Delete useless Samsung apps that won't stay off.

What OS version are you running?  2.3.4 seems to be ok. 2.3.3 light killing battery.  2.3.5 and 2.3.6 shows battery killing time.

Some of the posts suggest its a wifi/cell radio issue, where it does not shut down fully when not in use.

And a whole lot of other things suggested that worked for others:

USB port has a flaw. Clean it if has grime so charger plug gets full contact

Battery not calibrated to the OS and is not charging properly. So if the phone is off, is it seeing the battery actual charge state? Results in strange charging times.

SD card causes problem. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2470091

Phone keeps calling to the tower and sending tiny data packets back and forth. Radio on all the time
