overpriced contracts

why are the prices become so high on a new contract. because of that i now have to take other avenues to upgrade my phone.

Welcome to the new world created by our government who determined 2 year contracts were better for Canadians than 3 year contracts. The Phone subsidy now has to be recouped in fewer months than previously.

The subsidy hasn't even entered in to it I have a 6 gb plan for 65 dollars over 3 years with 13 extra on top of that. For me to upgrade and keep 6 gob my plan would go up to 125 a month plus device subsidy
If you do the math on just the plan telus and the other carriers are actually making more money in less time

Welcome to the modern era. The old plans had a ton of data for much cheaper rates. If you bought your own phone you could keep your old plan. It's what I did.

However the $65 6GB plan was a promo. A repeated promo, but a promo none-the-less. It was offered a number of times including fall 2013, but had been offered a number of times previously to compete with Rogers 6GB for $30 promo. I took advantage of my first such promo shortly after Telus released the iPhone 3Gs.
It is not really comparing apples when you quote a limited time offer against the regular price. I'm as frustrated as any that the prices have climbed, but you should be comparing current prices to what you would have chosen were the promo not available at the time.
Furthermore the wireless providers wanted to get us hooked on using data, and being comfortable with not having to manage a limit. They marketed the product and we bought into the lifestyle. Just like the automobile industry the low price on the ad gets you in the door, but mot of us want the comforts and pay more for the car, insurance and gas. I'd like to see more discounts as well, but I expect we are in a mature enough industry now that they will be few and far between.
EDIT: for comparison in 2009, an iPhone on a 3 year term 200 local minutes and 1 GB data was $50 /month. Today a similar package is $65 or $70 per month, with far better data speeds. Adjust $10 for subsidy changes and carrying charges due to the 24 month period, and the equivalent cost is in the $55 - $60 range
Finally, as a shareholder through my pension and RRSP, they SHOULD be making more money in less time!

Yeah. Except the actual math says you're wrong. When anyone with even the slightest interest in the truth takes those 2yr prices and extrapolates them over 3 years, they soon realize that we're paying significantly more per mth now.
The fact of the matter is that Telus, Rogers and Bell used this piece of legislation to increase revenue at YOUR expense. Don't believe the bile they're spewing.

You are leaving out the fact that after 2 years you are eligible for a subsidised phone upgrade with the new plan vs. waiting 3 years for another subsidised phone upgrade. If you want to extrapolate out to 3 years and call it "the truth" then include the fact that you will have had a new phone for 1 year already vs. still having your 3 year old phone with the old plan.

Yep it sucks but at least its not 2007 20$ for unlimited text 8 for voicemail 8 for caller id 20 for long distance ...blah blah

The plans were changed but the phones are not getting any cheaper, the providers had to adapt since Bell, Rogers & Telus are not the manufacturer. An iphone can cost up to $1000 😉
