thinking about getting a 5th generation ipod touch. i was just wondering if it can be put on a data plan so i can use the internet and texting without having to find a wifi spot.

Another option is to get one of those wireless hotspots.

Currently the iPod touch only includes WiFi and Bluetooth radios, in order to connect to the TELUS Data Network you need an either HSPA or LTE radio. So unfortunately, no this will not work. If you'd like both text messaging and data to work, you would need an iPhone. If you just want to connect to the data network, an iPad with 3G/4G capability will suffice. You can still send iMessage with the iPad or use a 3rd party IM service.
