Password error message at home - can't send email

Nel3
Neighbour
I am unable to send email over wifi at home or connected elsewhere on my iPhone 6 Plus nor iPad and am getting an email password error message even though it's unchanged.

I can receive mail and Internet is working.

This seems to happen on occasion for me as well, including this morning. Give it a few minutes or so and it will likely correct itself. It is possibly a temporary issue with the outgoing mail server.

An email system consists of two servers: IMAP or POP servers (map.telus.net) for incoming mail delivered to your device, and SMTP servers (smtp.telus.net) for outgoing messages. Thus, incoming mail can be unaffected while outgoing is, or vice versa.

Let us know if it continues past an hour, and we can offer further comment and suggestions.

I am getting the exact same error from my home computer. Cannot send email through smtp1.telus.net.

"Login to server smtp1.telus.net failed".

Nothing has changed on my side as far as I know. It was working late last night.

Working for me on all my devices this morning.

Can you login to the webmail interface at webmail.telus.net?

Yes, I can sign onto the webmail website no problem. It's just from my Thunderbird email that I'm getting this error. I'm in queue to chat with Telus support about this.

Working now after the Telus support person told me to change the outgoing server name and the authentication method to none. After that, emails were being successfully sent out. Funny how it stopped working though when I've used the same settings for months.

Thanks for your reply, NFtoBC.

What did they have you change it to? Mine have been fine for months as well

The Telus support person had me change the outgoing server from smtp1.telus.net to smtp.telus.net. I had been using smtp1.telus.net for many months.

And before the Telus person could reply, I also changed the Authentication Method for outgoing emails from "Password-Insecure" to "No authentication".

Once the second part was done, my emails started going successfully.

This is in Thunderbird, but I'm sure the settings are the same in other email clients.

The same thing happened yesterday (5 Oct 16) on my wife's computer running Tbird after years of no problems. I set authentication to None and it worked fine. It may be a Tbird issue; there have been several odd glitches like this since Tbird was disconnected from Mozilla.

Thanks for the reply, it's now going on 3 hours. My husband's is sending fine from same service.

Having the same problem on my iPhone and iPad which were working until 48 hrs ago.  Spent over 2 hrs with Telus support and still cannot solve the problem. The only way i can send emails on my iPad is to remove the outgoing smpt fields blank  plus use a Telus internet service which is what I have for my home service meaning that I will be unable to use wifi to send emails. As for my iPhone I do not have Telus as my cellular provider which means that I am unable to send emails out for now .

Have you shut the phone off completely?  I was having problems yesterday which were corrected by a reboot.

I did power off many times.

I am going to try again tomorrow and maybe try apple support to see if they can throw some light on it. I will keep you posted.

What are the SMTP settings on your iPad and iPhone? They should use port 1025, and your credentials should be password, with your email address and password as credentials.

I am having this same problem.  TELUS has referred me to Apple who have proven this a TELUS connectivity problem.  I'm beating my head against a wall.

I'm running into the same issue while travelling, and using different points of connection. Sometimes on Telus LTE, and sometimes other folks Wi-fi.
