Thanks NFtoBC.
Unfortunately those instructions don't help with the iPad, at least on iOS 7.1.2. Settings, in its wisdom, has decided I have an IMAP account with Telus (it's actually a POP account), so removes the POP option. For my Gmail account, Settings lets me choose IMAP or POP, but not in the case of Telus.
I previously had the account working fine on my iPad but recently wiped the device and did a restore. When I originally configured it for the Telus account the software must have been less "intelligent", and allowed me to choose POP.

Aren't you clever! I'm not home yet, but past the IMAP/POP hurdle. I'm getting error messages about being unable to connect but shall pursue this at a more liesurely pace.
As for your question about why POP and not IMAP, I've feared making the switch and either losing old messages or getting endless duplications of them. Probably irrational, but something I've always put off for another day. Until now, POP has worked just fine for me.

I've just been reading online about past reports of problems with Telus IMAP. I suspect not widespread, but I must read further.
It doesn't trouble to have POP on both devices. I consider the computer my "master", and let the iPad remove old emails from memory at its own pace.

Hi Duncantho, keep us posted on the progress with email setup along with @NFtoBC 's sweet work arounds! 🙂

I've had no success sending or receiving. Am at a loss.

Don't use an ipad, but if you can change the outgoing server port from 25 to 587 it may work for you.

I'm not sure that "Don't use an ipad" is the answer. Telus email worked fine on it for more than three years, until I foolishly wiped my iPad and started over from scratch.
But I thank you for the suggestion to change the outgoing server port to 587. Unfortunately 587 (and a few other suggested ports) doesn't get things working.

Sorry, I didn't write that too well. I meant I don't use an ipad. oops.
Glad to see that the correct answer got posted for you though!

SA, I burst out laughing when I read your explanation. It's a habit of mine, too, to drop the 'I' in messages.
Cheers.

Oops — I had missed Nighthawk's email. I'll give his/her tip a try.
Thanks, NFtoBC.

Nighthawk has set me right and I've thanked him — as I do you, NFtoBC, for drawing my attention to his answer.
