The only option appears to be IMAP, which I don't want.

Apple seems to be forcing the IMAP on iOS devices. Tried on my iPhone running 7.1.2 also. Defaulted right to IMAP. There is a workaround though.

I had missed your message. Many apologies!
More to the point, you solved my problem. Actually I had stumbled on a similar suggestion for forcing the POP option to show (typing an incorrect password). But your tip, with step-by-step instructions, prompted me to discover a mistake I'd been making. For user name I'd been entering my full email address instead of just the first half. (Some suggest that when troubleshooting gmail).
