Carrier changed

Hello,

I'm currently travelling to ASIA. I'm new to travelling overseas in general and from friendly tips I was advised to tick OFF Cellular Data. Before leaving Toronto.

My concern is that even with Cellular Data turned off. Why is my Carrier changing to every new country.

That will be since Telus is only found in Canada. Each country you go to will have a carrier that deals with Telus in some way which is why you see a new carrier. It's not using data but you have cellular enabled and cellular data turned off in the settings. If you have a travel plan you should be ok. If not the cost per call/SMS can add up.

Because you have only turned off the data radio of your phone. The voice circuit is still live, and connecting to local carriers. If you are concerned about roaming, you can either remove your SIM card, or turn on Airplane mode, which turns off all radios in your phone, then turn on only Wi-Fi if you want a connection to access the internet at a local Wi-Fi hotspot.  You will not be able to receive calls or texts if you do either of these last two options.

I'm very thankful of letting me know about the Airplane mode and Wi-fi combination for an added peace of mind while travelling.

Thoughts....

• Pay attention to your airplane mode..... With airplane mode engaged.... I can still turn on cellular voice/data.
• public wifi in Asia?  Seriously consider using a VPN.  You want to encrypt your userid's and passwords.

Exactly what @Nighthawk said. If you turned off cellular data than  you will not be charged any data charges however if you are using voice calls and texting than those are roaming onto the Asian network. Telus has roaming agreements in place with those other carriers so that they do not have to go and build their own towers in every country around the world but, simply pay a fee to that carrier and in return those carriers can use the Telus towers for their customers. If you purchased a roaming package before leaving than you would not be charged anything additional. For Asia Telus offers Explorer and Discover passes or the Easy roam $10 a day but, each of those options only cover certain countries. I see a lot of customers go to the Philippines with a layover in Japan who only purchased one package. The Discover package or $10 package will cover Japan but not Philippines which is covered by an explorer package.
