TELUS TV Digital Box Offer

Have not been here for a long while. I recently got this free upgrade offer via email from Telus. Currently have an Optic TV PVR set top box, and one other set top box in the house. The main set has a Yamaha receiver and a sound system. Would it be worthwhile to "upgrade", and am I likely to be opening a can of compatibility worms? Am I correct in that the new system does not store recordings internally but does it to a cloud where it remains available for  90 days, rather than indefinitely? Is the included remote likely to handle the Yamaha receiver switching and sound control? Currently using a Logitec Harmony 650 remote that is just barely working.

Any other issues with this new box that I should be aware of before jumping in?

  • On a slightly different note - I got a text from telus to get upgrades to the new boxes. The link does not work in that is shows an error message when trying to load my address. When I called Telus I got someone who could not help me then sent me to the Loyalty team who kept me on hold and wanted to send out a technician . It was my understanding that this process is essentially plug and pray. Telus sends you the new box and your recycle the olds ones. No one at Telus could help me out so I am hoping it is an error on the Telus website and should be fixed soon

Don't upgrade, I did and the new 24S box has picture quality issues, it is very bad. It seems to be very underpowered, hockey games are totally bad whereas the old 4K box was excellent and always impressed me on my new TCL tv. The 24S is not an upgrade!

I watched the Oilers vs Kraken game that I had recorded and I agree the image quality is very poor. The Kraken players looked like black blobs moving around the ice. The picture is over saturated and the dynamic range to the colour intensity is gone.

I am debating about going back to my old system, and sorting out my remote issues some other way. This new remote is mickey mouse.

Where do you find the reviews? I did a search and found nothing useful.

Hello! It's definitely worthwhile to upgrade, as our newest Optik platform has many new features such as unlimited cloud-based recordings up to 90 days, personalized user profiles, access to tons of apps from the Google Play Store, and seamless integration of various streaming services such as Netflix and Prime Video just to name a few! We do have a number of Yamaha codes you could try in terms of pairing as well. We're always here if you have any questions about the upgrade!

I tried the upgrade, and it has been a bit of a disaster. Mainly through trial and error I now have our LG TV and Yamaha receiver turning off and on with the Telus remote. I have to change the input with the Yamaha remote, and they play a major guessing game with the rest of the buttons including the TV input on the Telus remote. It probably takes me 5 minutes or more to turn on my system and actually watch something. When I get the inputs sorted out it then I can control volume from the Yamaha receiver.

But the other issue is image quality. It has gone downhill to the point it is more like standard definition than high definition, especially with recordings.

Not impressed and if I can't gets these issues sorted out I am going to return it to go back to the old system.

Thanks for the review. I was looking into switching, but I will definitely stay with the old system for as long as possible.

Can you confirm the free cloud based recording service does not end after 90 days, and it is the recordings that are not kept more than 90 days?

We can confirm that the cloud-based recording service itself does not end after 90 days. Only the recordings have a 90-day retention period, meaning anything saved will automatically delete after that timeframe, but your ability to record and use the cloud PVR continues without interruption.
