New 2026 Optik TV Box woes

First take on our new Telus Optic TV box.

We received our new boxes last week to replace the current 4 that we have. We were told by a friendly tech services rep in the Philippines that everything would be the same or better and that we would still have our recorded programs and I assumed scheduled settings.

No such luck. Not only have we lost recordings, but we need to reschedule programs for recording. Accessing the recordings now involves one extra step. Furthermore, there are no menu options for Play, Save, Delete, Series record info, Cancel series, Change settings, series priority, and Delete recordings.

The screen is often cluttered with windows of other offerings and options; particularly when the TV is first turned on. Finally figured out to hit the back button to clear the detritus.

The Guide no longer shows live video previews of the channels; just a still of the show or channel.

The pause, skip, and fast forward modes are quirky.

Am I a happy camper? Far from it.

Anyone love the new boxes?

      I don’t think they liked what I said complaining about the poor quality of the new Telus boxes. 🫤

  • Here's another annoyance. To access the recorded programs list previously, one click was required. Now, I need to press the Home button, scroll over 3 selections, then press the OK button; 5 steps! 

    Furthermore, of the three TVs that we've switched over in the last 4 days, the first one we've need to reinstall/initialize [whatever it's called] 3 times, and the second one twice; the TV/box was not responding to the remote. Each time we needed to re-login to apps such as Netflix.

    Improved user experience indeed!

      Accessing the recordings list can be done in one click. Hold the "rec" button down until the list appears.

        Thanks Madmax-23. I discovered that yesterday when a "tip" [in small text] appeared momentarily [< 5 secs?] on screen. I should have RTFM if there was one.

  • One would hope that a new OP would improve user interface experiences. Sadly, as I have outlined, this has not been the case.

    The new Optik TV boxes operate on an entirely different platform which means recordings from the older boxes cannot be migrated over and some of the interface has been re-designed. We understand this will require some adjustment but we'll pass the feedback along as well :).
