There is an on-screen prompt at the 4-hour mark that asks if you're still watching, and if you respond with the remote, it will reset the 4-hour timer. Similarly, if you do anything during 4 hours of playback (change channels, navigate the interface, increase the volume), the 4-hour timer resets. One potential solution could be for you to ask the dog walker (or train the dog...) to mash the remote.
The 'ads' or 'picture of how to use my remote control' screens are a custom TELUS screensaver carousel intended to highlight new and featured programming and give navigation and how-to tips and tricks. This comes on after 4 hours of inactivity during playback or after 15 minutes when any menu (Home, Live TV, On Demand) is displayed.
There is also a setting where the box will go into standby mode after a set time following periods of inactivity.
All of these settings are in place for environmental reasons; content streaming forever has an impact on downstream content networks and boxes powered on have power draw implications.
