FireTV back button

I used to be able to start the Telus TV app on Firestick and press the back button to  get rid of the distracting overlay stuff and just watch TV.  With the recent app update that doesn't work. The back button asks to exit the app, and if I don't want to exit, the overlay stuff is still there.  I was stuck and annoyed.  I later figured out that I must move to "Live TV" and press the back button to get rid of the overlay advertising, but how is this an improvement? It is more buttons to press and more things to teach everyone else to do just to be able to watch TV.  Maybe there is some other option I don't know about?

Software is supposed to make life easier, not hinder me.

  • Instead of tapping the back button or manually navigating up to the Live TV tab, try this when the menu overlay gets in your way:

Press and hold the Back button for 2 full seconds. There's also a helpful thread at https://forum.telus.com/discussions/my_home_services_and_devices/tv-user-interface-shortcomings/136842 that might help with some of the other changes.

TELUS_Support has the best solution to dismiss the Home Screen overlay which is to press and hold the back/exit button. This will also work on TELUS TV Digital Boxes and our Android TV app. Unfortunately, this new remote button interaction is an Amazon requirement that we were forced to make; they would not let us update our app until we made the change that a tap of the back/exit button prompted you to leave the app. You will notice similar button behaviour on other apps such as Prime Video, Disney+, YouTube etc (though we're not sure why Netflix isn't subject to the same requirement).

Ok, I can understand that amazon logic so all apps work the same.  Maybe that exit popup could have also notified the user that a press+hold of the back button was an option to get rid of the overlay.  Or an button cheat sheet somewhere in the app.

For sure, that would actually be super helpful. Thanks for the feedback we'll make sure to share this so it can be looked into for future updates!
