VPN disconnects internet using an Ethernet connection

Hello, I am connecting a Telus T3200M modem to an Android (Google) TV with an ethernet cable, and I would like to use a VPN. When I log in to different VPNs, it immediately disconnects the internet, and I have to do a hard reset on the TV to reconnect the ethernet. If I am using Wi-Fi instead, it does not disconnect the internet and the VPN works. I do not want to use Wi-Fi for the TV. I assume the issue is within the router or permissions through Telus as the setup works over Wi-Fi , but not through ethernet. Please provide any suggestions. Thank you.
