Separating the upstairs from tenants downstairs

Hi all,

We currently have Purefibre Gigabit Internet and are reasonably happy with the speed and coverage in our home. We are considering renting out our basement and would like to include Internet to sweeten the deal. What we don't want is to be responsible for any misuse of our Internet. Has anyone managed to segment their Internet in such a way that the tenants have their own IP address and cannot access anything on our home network?

We have the standard square box and the WiFi cylinder unit upstairs and a Boost 6E Mini downstairs.

Would we have to purchase/lease another router to make this configuration work?

Thanks!

  • I understood that the Internet plan I was on gives me access to two IP addresses. Could I just plug a second router into the ONT and get a second IP address?

If Wi-Fi is sufficient you could just enable the guest network. As stated by Telus: "A guest network is a secondary network that provides secure Internet access for your guests. This network can have a different password from your main network. Devices connected to the guest network will be able to access the internet, but not other shared files, printers, network storage, etc."

You would need to login to your router which is usually at http://192.168.1.254/ and configure it there.

Hi, thanks for your quick reply. I am trying to protect myself from any illegal activities that they undertake while using my Internet so I would like to ensure that they are on an easily identifiable IP address so I'm not sure that the "guest" network is the best solution here unless there is something that I don't understand.

The only IP address that is presented to the Internet (WAN) is the one for your Telus router regardless of whether or not the local connection (LAN) is a guest or not.

To get a seperate IP address for the Internet you would need to bring in a second Telus service (router, etc) for your basement dwellers.
