Charges for iMessages?

Why am I being charged for airtime and data/sms for sending and receiving iMessages?

Did you receive iMessage(s) in “blue” or was it text messages which are “green”. Even if you’re in the messages app you can send either text messages or iMessages.

What does your cell plan include?

iMessages use data, and if your plan does not include data, or you go over your data plan amount, then you are charged at either pay-per-use rates or overage rates.  You can got to Settings > Messages, and turn off iMessage if you do not have data. IF you do this, you will need to delete all conversations you have had in Messages with your contacts, and start them anew.
