My Telus E397 worked well with the Cradlepoint MBR1200B router until a firmware upgrade to Connection Manager apparently changed the firmware on the Huawei E397. Is there a way to revert to a back level of the firmware?
Solved! Go to Solution.
I was able to resolve this problem yesterday during a conference call with Telus and Cradlepoint. Not sure if it works with all the Cradlepoint routers and maybe not even the MBR1200 but there is a solution for the MBR1200B
-Cradlepoint confirmed that the latest firmware update to the E397 makes it incompatible with the router
-they suggested (but I found it wasn't necessary, this fix also worked on older firmware) that the router be updated to the latest firmware, currently 5.0.0
-after logging into the router admin screen go to Internet > Connection Manager
-the E397 should be listed as LTE: HUAWEI Mobile in the WAN Interfaces screen
-click on that line and then the EDIT button on the top left of the WAN Interfaces screen
-the WAN Configuration window should pop up
-go to the SIM/APN/Auth Settings tab
-change the Access Point Configuration from Default to Manual, this will allow you to change the APN
-in the APN box type sp.telus.com (the connection problem was in the APN setting on the E397, it is set by Telus to isp.telus.com)
-click on submit to apply the APN change, the router will reboot and should now connect as usual
-at the time Telus noted that the sp.telus.com address is usually only used for smartphones so there may be an issue with billing/plans that may need to be resolved so you should watch that it doesn't cause a problem on that side as well.
-after this change was made the modem worked in any other MBR1200B so it's possible that you could change the APN thru the connection manager on another pc and it should work when placed in the router but I haven't tested that.
Hope it gets you up and running
Some important updates to this issue.
Telus does not like you to use the sp.telus.com APN. They now bill this at Tier 4 which makes it very expensive. I was given a one-time bill credit but they are completely disowning this workaround.
The good news is that isp.telus.com APN now works! According to the rep, some issues were resolved in the 'back-end.'
