Agreed...

  • where are you going?  There are different strategies for different countries as they have different rates.
  • How long are you gone?  Telus offers temporary solutions, but if you are gone for months.... getting a destination country solution may work out better.
  • How much data are you consuming?  How much data do you consume each month locally?
  • Is it important to retain that local number when travelling?  SIM replacement with an unlocked phone is simple, but getting a mobile hotspot is another option.

  • For low usage, your local number with a travel package may be sufficient.
  • Medium usage could be a SIM card swap with your unlocked Telus phone.
  • Heavy usage could be a foreign mobile hotspot or signing onto a multi-month contract with the destination country.

Start by look at your recent months activity to gauge your data usage. Many use their phone less as they are on vacation relaxing. For me, Google Maps and researching my upcoming new daily destination with streaming video racks me into heavy usage. The roaming fees justify a SIM card swap or getting a second foreign device.

Depends where you travel. In the US it can be as low as $1/MB, elsewhere higher.

See https://mobility.telus.com/en/BC/travel/index.shtml?INTCMP=homeQLH2travel for more info.
