I was able to move my Nexus S from Rogers to TELUS without any problems. I just had to buy a TELUS SIM and give them the IMEI of the phone.

First, check to see that your non-TELUS phone is compatibile on their network. You can do so with their tool: http://mobility.telus.com/en/ON/phones-and-devices/devicecompatibility.shtml Next, if you're using a smartphone, you'll likely have to add their APN in order for Data and multi-media messaging to work. Here are the TELUS settings: Name: TELUS SP
APN: sp.telus.com
Proxy: 74.49.0.18
Port: 80
Username: <Not set>
Password: <Not set
Server: <Not set>
MMSC: http://aliasredirect.net/proxy/mmsc
MMS Proxy: 74.49.0.18
MMS Port: 80
MMS Protocol: WAP 2.0
MCC: 302
MNC: 220
APN type: default,mms

that tool does not always work. I did not work for my non-telus phone. What device are you considering? As long as it supports the frequencies telus uses it should work.
Telus uses UMTS/HSPA 850MHz and/or 1900MHz the phone should support both to get the best coverage.
Also telus has 1700 for LTE Band.

If ypou want to use Telus network on non-Telus phone,Make sure that phone is unlocked.
if it's locked by single network means, you will need to unlock it.
For unlocking you can approach your service provider or else try to buy an unlocking service from any one of the online unlocking service provider like TheUnlockArena.com
