problem with text inbox

As of yesterday, I cannot open my texting inbox. I have an old flip phone, Samsung SCH-a645. An incoming text does appear, and I can view it, but when I try to open my inbox, the phone goes blank and shuts down. Sometimes I get a blue screen that says Emergency Download Mode or something, and all I can do then is take out and reinsert the battery.

To be honest it's such an old device I wouldn't even know where to begin troubleshooting it. I believe that phone does not take a SIM card which means it's in the cdma network. Telus will no longer be providing service to cdma sevices as of January 2017. Might be time to get a replacement

I second @Mobility_Princess comments. The phone received its FCC certification in 2006, and was sold through 2008. If you like the flip phone form factor the Alcatel A392CC is available for $80 outright or free on some plans. You can also buy it as a prepaid phone if you prefer prepaid service.  If it lasts as long as your current phone, it is an outlay of less than 80 cents per month.
