My father finished his 3 year term and i just started my contract 8 months ago. Is it possible for me to give him my phone and get a new device for myself?

Yes, though you will still be responsible to continue to pay your contracted device balance and service plan. All you need do is switch his SIM to your phone. And then your SIM to the new phone.  If the SIM cards are different sizes, you can buy a proper sized one from Telus, and update the information in the 'My Account' section of the Telus site.
