Prior to billing period, is there a way I check to see the number of minutes I've used up on my long distance plan?

Usually, usage can only be seen once the bill is generated. You should be able to access it when you login to your online account at: http://www.telus.com/ Otherwise, you may have to contact Customer Care at 3102255 for assistance. http://www.telus.com/get-help/contact-us/index.jsp
