MeTv in Alberta?

Just Moved In

Could MeTv be added to the line up of channels offered to Telus customers in Alberta? It's a great tv channel and is already available to viewers in the Vancouver area (even as part of basic cable). I would like to see it offered and available to viewers in Edmonton and Calgary.

I looked up Shaw's channel lineup and ME TV is not on it. Those who love ME TV would also love the Antenna TV channel as well.

Hey linarm, I just called Shaw just to verify that they carry kvos me tv in Alberta, and I was told that they carry it just on their  Shaw cable in Alberta, i gave my postal code to make sure we are eligible and we are, but it’s not carried on their satellite tv, only cable. I was only asking about Alberta so I don’t know about any other areas.

Shaw carries KVOS in BC. They don't list it on their website for available channels in any Alberta town I've tried.

KVOS is changing. It's losing some of the content and has a new owner that is moving things around.

Oh no!

Thanks for the update though. I guess in the meantime I’ll just keep buying the retro DVD box sets. 😞

KVOS aside, as I type this, I am watching MeTv in Kelowna on a Shaw channel 41. It is now 2019 and still no MeTv in Alberta. Now is the time for a good family channel like MeTv to finally come to Alberta.

Please add MeTV to Telus TV!! I was surprised to see it included on SHAW cable when I visited BC!!  So great for Babyboomers!! Columbo, Perry Mason, Green Acres!!

I see a lot of requests for METV for Alberta going back as far as 2015. Do we have this channel - no. Obviously TELUS pay attention to this forum.

It would be nice to have a reason.. let’s keep the request going..

Short answer is the CRTC hasn't approved MeTV for rebroadcast outside of the existing area it's available in central and southern BC.

Is there anyway we can petition the CRTC to look at approving the rebroadcast outside of the existing area?

As a consumer? Not that I know of.

I hope that people have not given up on requesting this channel. This specific request has been ongoing since 2015 and not a peep from TELUS. It's not clear why an application for broadcast in Alberta has not been made to date. Some great shows on this channel including Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel, Lost in Space, The Flintstones, Columbo, M*A*SH, The **bleep** Van **bleep** Show... There is no channel comparable to this one offering quality vintage programming.

Especially when this Channel is in BC!! I am thinking that it is available on Shaw, but not sure.. and yes, why is there no explanation!! 😥

KVOS is still only aired in very specific regions in BC. It is not available in Alberta. One thing to keep in mind is that  KVOS is the broadcaster that is airing a feed for MeTV. MeTV itself has never had any CRTC license or approval to air in Canada.

Getting licensing from the CRTC for KVOS to be aired nationally would be a costly and time consuming process. That's assuming KVOS even meets the CRTC criteria to get a license to begin with. KVOS is grandfathered in BC since it has been available OTA in southern BC for decades. Plus without sufficient demand for that channel, it doesn't make sense for any carrier to start the process. Even Shaw hasn't tried to get licensing for KVOS outside of the existing areas in BC. Another hurdle would be content. I doubt KVOS or MeTV has the Canadian national broadcast rights for the shows they air in the US.

@NighthawkFirst off, yes, I'm sure that everyone is aware that KVOS is the broadcaster airing the feed for MeTV. Who even said anything about it getting aired nationally? Why would Eastern Canada get a feed from Washington (state)? Typically, Alberta and BC get their U.S. feeds from Washington. Montreal, for example, gets its primary channel feeds for U.S. networks from New York and Vermont. They can get their own MeTV feed if they want from their own Southern area state. There is obviously a demand for the channel since it is widely carried in B.C. Obviously, the channel has Canadian rights since they broadcast in B.C. It is not carried exclusively in the southern part of B.C. It is carried in Prince George, for example. Judging from your comments, you must be located in Eastern Canada. If you don't know where Prince George is located, it is 778km north of Vancouver and 737km west of Edmonton, so actually closer to Edmonton than Vancouver. Take a look at the 2012 CRTC decision: https://crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2012/2012-152.htm which approved carriage of KVOS to various B.C.municipalities including Prince George. There is no reason that TELUS cannot submit a similar application for carriage of the channel in Alberta. A time consuming process? Hey, that's the business that they are in, also standard procedure for obtaining carriage of a channel.

Thank you for the explanation!! Telus started in the West - so should give Alberta as much preferential treatment as B.C.!!  Haha!!
