Slow Internet Speeds Troubleshooting
If you’re experiencing slow internet speeds on your home connection, below are a few steps you can try to repair your connection:
Eliminate possible site issues
Browse to multiple sites to make sure that the lag isn’t isolated to one specific site. This will verify if the issue is located on your network. If only one site is affected, contact the administrator of the site to provide feedback of the issue.
Test the connection on more than one device (i.e.: laptop, cellphone, tablet). If the slow speed is isolated , further physical troubleshooting of the device is required.
Wired vs wireless
Determine if speed is slow on both wired (Ethernet) and wireless connections. The best way to test this is by running a speedtest.
First, close any firewall and antivirus programs, streaming websites (uTorrent, Vuze, Bittorrent, etc.) and cloud services (iCloud, Dropbox, or Google drive).
Run a speed test for download/upload bandwidth on both the wired and wireless connections, then compare the results. If the wireless speed test results are significantly slower, Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps can be found here.
If disabling your firewall improves your speed, you can turn your firewall back on and test the speeds again to compare. If speeds revert back to being slow after re-enabling firewall, adjusting your firewall settings will repair the issue.
Refresh the connection
Reboot the modem by completely disconnecting the power for 10 seconds. This is a great step to try when troubleshooting any connection issues.
Wait for the “DSL” light to turn on solid green, and test the Internet.
