How to Recognize and Avoid Common Scams
Scammers use deceptive tactics to steal personal information and money. This article explains the most common scam types and how to protect yourself.
Common Scams
Prize / Promotion Scams - Fraudsters claim you've won a prize or contest you never entered. They request payment, personal information, or bank details to "claim" your winnings.
Call Related Scams - Scammers impersonate legitimate organizations through phone calls. They create urgency to pressure you into sharing sensitive information or making immediate payments.
Brand Impersonation Scams - Criminals pose as trusted companies like TELUS, banks, or government agencies. They use fake emails, texts, or websites that look authentic to steal your credentials.
Digital / Online Scams - These scams occur through email, social media, or fraudulent websites. Common tactics include phishing links, fake login pages, and malicious downloads.
Identity Theft - Thieves collect your personal information to open accounts, make purchases, or commit crimes in your name. This information often comes from data breaches or social engineering.
Protect Yourself
- Verify unexpected contacts by calling the organization directly using official numbers from their website.
- Never share passwords, PINs, or account numbers through email or phone calls.
- Check sender email addresses carefully for subtle misspellings or incorrect domains.
- Avoid clicking links in unsolicited messages.
- Enable two-factor authentication on all important accounts.
- Monitor your bank statements and credit reports regularly.
If You've Been Targeted
Report all suspicious activity immediately. Contact your bank if you accidentally shared financial information. File a report with local police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
When To Contact TELUS
Contact TELUS directly through official channels if you receive suspicious communications claiming to be from TELUS. Rather than responding to potentially fraudulent messages, use the contact numbers on your bill, the official TELUS website contact page, or send our TELUS_Support account here a private message to inquire further.
