Copper Theft: Impact on Communities

Copper theft from TELUS network equipment disrupts phone service, internet access, and emergency communications across all communities. Report suspicious activity immediately to protect vital services. Our copper Assurance and Network Assurance teams work tirelessly to mitigate and respond to these incidents. By increasing surveillance, enhancing security, and investing in PureFibre, we strive to reduce impacts. But we can't do it alone.

Recognize Suspicious Activity

Thieves target above-ground and underground copper cables using various methods. Watch for people wearing safety vests posing as utility workers near utility equipment who cannot provide identification, vehicles attached to aerial cables, or anyone cutting or removing wiring from TELUS infrastructure.

Report Suspicious Activity

Call local police immediately if you witness copper theft or suspicious behavior around TELUS equipment. Provide the location, description of individuals and vehicles, and what you observed. Do not approach or confront anyone engaged in suspicious activity.

Safety first: Copper theft creates electrical hazards and service disruptions. Damaged cables can cause power surges, communication outages, and safety risks for the public and emergency responders.

Impact on Your Community

Copper theft disrupts phone service for homes and businesses, blocks access to 911 emergency services, and causes internet outages affecting work and education. Repairs can take hours or days depending on damage severity.

When to Contact TELUS

Contact TELUS customer support if you experience sudden service loss that may be related to equipment damage or theft. Report the outage and mention any suspicious activity you observed in your area. TELUS network teams respond to theft incidents and work with police to restore service quickly.
