Pending Bill after 7 years after closing the account?

Hi there,

I closed my Telus account in 2018 and moved out of Canada. Last week (30 Sep 2025) I accidently noticed an email in my spam box from a company called General Credit Services about an outstanding balance of $33. First ignored thinking its a scam email. But today 09 Oct 2025, I received an email indicating its the second notice.

I talked to the agent in the email and got a pretty interesting response. They say the final bill was generated and a paper copy was sent to my address in 2018 despite I had alwasy opted for email statements for years before I closed my account.

She indicated that it was my fault that I did not follow the T&Cs on the "legal contract" and should have contacted Telus to check any outstanding balances 45 days after I closed my account.

My question is even if there was a balance, why didn't Telus send me electronic statements and why sending it to General Credit Services in 2025 for a bill that was generated in 2018?

Is General Credit Services Inc a scam company? Did I just get scammed? Btw, in order to avoid getting my Credit History affected, I went ahead and made the payment since the amount was small and it wasn't worth my time fighting.

The real question is a company like Telus that is well established corporate trying to scam people like this...Unbelievable!

  • Hmm I've been receiving emails from them too about a $300 balance, but the account number GCS listed in their email is not mine! I have to wonder if GCS is working with a messed up database or if they just decided to make a buck by messaging random people. You can always file a dispute about the claim on TransUnion, which can get the debt removed from your credit score if you can prove it's not yours

  • Well thank you Telus for sending my account with a $12 balance.. really appreciate that, phoned and paid it directly to close it with Telus and found out it was $12 owing and not the 130 something GCS is trying to get. Now I have to call and sit on hold for hours again to prove I paid it and closed it with Telus directly so GCS will get off my back about it when they seem to have just made up a number I owe.

  • Did you pay the balance to General Credit Services? I am dealing with the same thing right now. On hold with Telus to see if there are any outstanding amounts but have not made any payments to GCS, seems very suspicious. Also suspicious that it is not actually on my credit report as a collection so I am hoping it is a scam and nothing will come of it. I think it would be too old at this point to be legit?

Absolutely. It doesn't look like a Credit Agency. The original email had a phone number. The email response from the team member had a different number. Their website had a totally different numbers. Its looks like a scam. I knew I was scammed but I just couldn't take risk with my credit score so I did make a payment to GCS.

At this point, you would need to contact General Credit Services directly; and this is not a 'scam'. When one of our accounts gets sent to collections with no change in status, it's eventually purchased, in this case by GCS. This is why you'd need to contact them directly. Also, this process takes a while for sure, so that's what happened here, not someone 'sharing your information' with anyone which doesn't happen.

  • An update to this:

I called Telus and they did confirm that they had created a final bill with a very similar account that was mentioned to me by General Credit Services. However, I was told that since the account was so old it was never sent to any collection agency. So how did General Credit Services get all my information?

Agent's guess is someone with Telus who had access to my information secretly shared it to GCS. What a shame!
