Wifi+ costs

Considering Wifi+. Not sure it's worth the expense. I have unlimited data with my Telus Mobility account. When I experience wifi signal dropouts at home, it's a bother to turn off wifi manually on my phone but at least I can regain internet access again. So I'm wondering why I should invest $10/month plus a $200 service call / installation charge when it's actually in Telus' own interest to reduce my data usage by enabling the wifi coverage I'm already paying for. Telus is clearly promoting the Wifi+ option these days. But if I've already upgraded to fibre and my wifi has - until recently - been giving great speed and coverage, why should I have to sign up and pay for the new Wifi+? Is there any problem with simply using data all the time at home if my plan includes unlimited data?

  • WiFi coverage is about the signal reaching all parts of your home. That situation should not change much over time unless you move the router. If you say your signal is good for a month then deteriorates then the issue likely not coverage. You may be experiencing channel crowding/interference from all the WiFi signals from your neighbors. Depending on the router you have it may choose a different channel when it reboots so it may be good for a while until your neighbors reboot their routers and it chooses the same channel.

Unless you only have 1 mobile device and nothing else like computers, tablets, smart devices, etc. I don't see how only using mobile data at home is a viable option.

  • My wifi coverage at home is good ... until it becomes inconsistent and spotty. Tech support, with a video assist, checks my modem, router, and booster, then makes tweaks in their system, and I get a month or so of strong wifi. Then signal gets weak and coverage drops. Another 90 minutes of tech support can fix the issue again, for a while. Wifi+ promises to solve the problem - for $10/month plus a $200 service call. My question is whether I should even bother with improving my wife when I'm already paying for unlimited data on my phone. Wouldn't it be in Telus' interest to make my current fibre service solid instead of having me use up lots of data at their expense?

  • I'm not sure what you are asking. WiFi plus is for home installations where WiFi coverage is not good. If you have good WiFi coverage at home already then you don't need it.
