How to increase download speed of my Laptop

Hi all

I just upgraded to 1GB fiber internet plan lately. Telus provided me a brand new Telus 7 Wifi HUb / booster. All my Internet gears are at the basement.

If I connect my laptop via wifi next to the Hub at basement, my average download speed is around 770 Mbps.

However, I spend most of my time with my laptop upstairs at kitchen area. It is one floor up of my house from the basement. The average download speed is merely at 150-180 Mbps.

May I know what should I do to increase the download speed upstairs ? Should I get Telus Wifi 6 booster ?

Please kindly advise.

  • Hi there! If you’re adding a second TELUS Wi-Fi 7 Booster and connecting it by Ethernet to your TELUS Internet Box, there’s no extra software you need to install. The booster should automatically pair and mesh with your existing system. In most cases, you simply need to:

    • Plug the booster into power.
    • Connect it to your TELUS Internet Box using the Ethernet cable.
    • Wait a few minutes while it links up, the light will turn solid once it’s connected.

  • If I install an additional Telus Wifi 7 booster via ethernet cable in kitchen and connect to the Telus Internet box, do I need to install any software or make any changes to the 2nd Telus Wifi 7 device ?

    Please kindly advise.

Nighthawk Is an awesome CPU here on the Forum but doesn't work for the company so he wouldn't be able to help with that.

We do have Wi-Fi Plus as a service that will help your coverage situation: https://www.telus.com/en/internet/home-internet-add-wifi-plus

If you have any questions, feel free to send us a private message and we'll help you out but it is also possible that by moving the Wi-Fi 7 Boost upstairs might fix your issue

Speeds with wifi are never guaranteed. Between the basement and main floor you will have a lot of things that can interfere with wifi. Electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and even flooring materials, kitchen appliances, etc., can make a difference. If there are appliances between where you are in the kitchen and where the Boost 7 is, that is going to have a big impact

Getting a second access point, like a Boost, to put upstairs would help. Not a router but a wireless access point. A second Boost unit could work but you'd need a way to physically connect it to your existing Telus hardware for best results. A Boost 6 is slower than the 7. Don't try to get them to replace the Boost 7 as it's working. They will likely charge for that tech visit.

Additionally, changing which network frequency you are using can also make a difference. Higher frequencies can be interfered with easier. A lower frequency like 2.4GHz would have less interference but it's also used for slower wifi. You could always re-locate where the Boost is in the basement. Are you able to place it directly below the kitchen, if it's not already?
