DNS Question with two routers
My question is I have a second router plugged into lan port 1 of my T3200m.
I have all my wired and wireless devices on this router except my two Telus tv boxes.
If I set the second routers DNS to a public one like google’s for example, does that DNS stay intact through to the internet or does it get somehow reassigned a different or Telus DNS since I am passing through the T3200?
Also if I use a vpn on my devices or second router, does Telus just see that I am going to that vpn provider only?
thanks for your help!

- DNS with a second router behind the T3200M
If you set your second router to use Google DNS (8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4) or any other public DNS:
All devices behind that router will ask the second router for DNS, and the second router will then forward those queries directly to the DNS servers you’ve set.
The T3200M does not rewrite or “force” DNS for downstream devices unless Telus specifically intercepts/redirects DNS at the ISP level (which they generally don’t for consumer connections).
So yes — your devices will actually be using Google DNS (or Cloudflare, or whatever you set), not Telus DNS, as long as your second router is configured properly. - VPN on your devices or second router
If you run a VPN on your devices individually: Telus will only see that those devices are making an encrypted connection to your VPN provider’s server. They can’t see which websites or apps you’re using beyond that.
If you run a VPN at the router level (on your second router): then all traffic from every device on that router is tunneled through the VPN. Telus will only see one encrypted connection between your second router and the VPN server.
In both cases, Telus just sees:
“Customer is connected to X VPN provider’s IP.”
They cannot see inside the tunnel.

Thank you.
I found when I changed the DNS setting to a public DNS on the router, my network music streamer sounded more open, transparent, and just better!
Strange perhaps, but maybe a quicker DNS.
