Telus Promotion - too good to be true?

I received a call from area code 825 number. Offered a $40 plan which includes new phone (iPhone 16 or Galaxy) 60GB and 1000 minutes international calling. After 2 years, buyout is $200 for phone. I asked for call back and call display showed 866-558-2273 which is Telus Customer service number. The original calls were from 825-445-7713. Is this a scam?

  • No personal info passed to them. They also said there'd be a 15 day trial period; after which i could cancel.

WeekendHacker Did you pass any personal info along to them? The 825 number is not listed in our directory and isn't typical for an outbound sales campaign. The display number should reflect an official TELUS toll-free number. Even then, numbers can be spoofed so we recommend staying extra vigilant with these types of calls.

Moreover, the offer they extended appears to be very generous. Consider this: the retail price of a basic iPhone 16 (128 GB) is: $1161. If financed over 24 months, that works out to be $48.38/month just for the device. As you can imagine, this scenario is highly unlikely.

Did they apply any pressure tactics to encourage you to jump on the offer?

They said it was a limited time offer.
Weird part is when I told them I'm with Rogers, they would transfer me to Rogers for the promotional deal.

I didn't pass any personal info.

The guy was smooth. Said his name is James Carmen.
