SIM Card in MBR1210 NETGEAR router
I have this MBR1210 "Mibile HSPA + Broadband 11n Wireless Router" that can accomodate a SIM card so presumably I can install it at the cottage where there are no land lines and get internet trough...

That is an ancient device. Bell offered that back in 2011 and it's 3G only. That won't work with Telus.

Darn. Unless where I want to put it (Hicktown Ontario near Hawkesbury) they still have 3G there? I assume the SIM card is related to the 3G and if it's recent doesn't mean it's backwards-compatible?

2 months agoA device that old may be carrier locked. If it is you are likely totally out of luck. I'm not sure if the cellular routers were originally but cell phones back then were carrier locked. You may also need a specific SIM / account to use as a SIM that's part of a phone plan may not work at all for a data only device.
3G is supposedly being retired nation wide in the near future by all carriers so that device won't be usable for long, if it'll work at all currently. Most carriers are charging extra for 3G currently also.

I searched for "modern replacement for netgear mbr1210 and stuff pops up, albeit at $164 (CDN) so not sure if 1) it would work with my new SIM card and 2) worth the price.

The tablet would need a specific SIM card and plan to be used as a hotspot. Telus does offer cellular internet and the associated hardware. (https://www.telus.com/en/internet/wireless-home-internet)
