new phone but keep existing plan
Is it possible to purchase a new phone but keep my existing plan?
If you purchase the new device outright, there shouldn't be an issue. If just renewing and getting a new device (but not fully purchasing it) it's doable if the plan you're on is still in-market (available).
so I can't buy a device directly from Telus? as an existing customer

Your best bet would be to purchase a device from the retailer directly.
