As FuzzyLogic mentioned, if you need to have separate bands you would need to disable SmartSteering. There's also this related thread on the subject https://forum.telus.com/discussions/my_home_services_and_devices/2-4-ghz-network/119853 

What device do you wish to do this with? You would need to have different SSIDs for the two different bands to make this work. This requires SmartSteering to be disabled on your wifi access point or router.
